It's been a long day of work, where everything that could have gone wrong – did. Earlier this morning the car would not start, which means taking the bus home. Sigh. The bus. Public transit that during rush hour emulates a can of sardines. Here, personal space doesn't exist and being pushed and shoved is the norm. The bus driver can make or break this experience.
I got on the 52 North toward Steeles bus, absolutely dreading the packed ride I was about to experience, but I was pleasantly surprised by a TTC driver. He loved his job and it showed through every action, such as bellowing the bus stops to ensure each and every person on his bus knew what stop was coming up, guiding people to the back in order to make it easier for people to come on and off the bus, and welcoming people with a cheerful, humorous and refreshing voice and attitude.
It is this type of reality check that demonstrates how simple it is for humans to transform a generally unpleasant experience into an outstanding one simply through their personality and attitude. I think this life lesson and principle should apply to everyone, especially those concerned with customer service.
