Why We Do What We Do:

In a recent conversation with Simon Sinek, author of the book Start With Why (and the second most watched Ted Talk speech), he suggested that our lives are influenced by events that occur at a very young age. While I never gave it much thought, after thinking back, he is absolutely right. For as long as I can remember, I have been very fond of two, separate, companies: Disney and McDonald's.

My experience with Disney began with watching cartoons and movies, followed later by visits to the theme parks, reading their business books, and in more recent times, going on their cruises. Throughout all of this, I have always been amazed by their pride in delivering a magical experience, their dedication to service, and as I get older, their commitment to innovation, or as they refer to it, imagineering. Whether it is an instant connection with their characters, the feeling at Walt Disney World that if you threw a piece of paper into the air it would be gone before it hits the ground, the way that they anticipate their guests needs, or the incredible technology that goes into so much of what they do, Disney truly delivers a great experience.

In the case of McDonald's, as with many young children, my attraction started with treats of the week and happy meals, but turned into so much more when I was hired for my first real job at the local restaurant.  I can truly say that my five and a half years at the company had a huge impact on my life as it included meeting many of my friends, and deciding to pursue a career in the hospitality and tourism industry. In addition, it was at McDonald's that I learned all about; how to treat employees, effective training systems, reward and recognition programs, and most importantly, QSC&V (Quality, Service, Cleanliness, and Value)- the guiding principle of the Golden Arches, and the fundamentals which SQM measures and monitors today.

While I have always thought that SQM was started as simply a Mystery Shopping company, deep down inside I truly want to help organizations become more like Disney and McDonald's... providing everyone with the best, possible, experience.
